About Inlays and Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are most commonly used to repair the teeth in the back of your mouth that have moderate decay or slight fractures or cracks but not enough for a crown restoration. An inlay or onlay is the “midpoint” between a filling and a crown, i.e. there’s too much damage for the tooth to be fixed with a filling, but a full-coverage is not warranted. An inlay is applied to the inside of your tooth, and an onlay covers the cusps of your tooth.

How Are Inlays and Onlays Placed?

Dental inlays and onlays are typically completed in two appointments. After giving you local anesthetic to numb the area, the dentist will then remove and damage and decay prepare the tooth for the inlay or onlay. We will scan or take an impression of your teeth so that the porcelain inlay or onlay can be made at the lab. Inlaysand onlays are commonly made of porcelain which is similar to the natural look of your tooth. You will return to the office to have the inlay or onlay permanently “seated” in or on your tooth.
