About Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is a common procedure designed to remove excess gum tissue or bone to expose more of the tooth. When not enough of a tooth is sticking out to place a dental crown or another type of restoration, then a crown lengthening procedure is typically required to help support the restoration. This typically occurs when the tooth is damaged or when a crown or filling falls off, and decay is left underneath. Individuals with a lot of gum around their teeth could also benefit from crown lengthening.
How is crown lengthening done?
A professional teeth cleaning is typically required prior to the procedure. You will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize pain and discomfort. A laser will be used to expose the root of your tooth and the surrounding bone. It will then be washed with sterile water to prevent infection and stitches will be applied. We will send you home with detailed instructions on how to treat your mouth after the procedure so it can heal quickly and painlessly. Usually just one follow-up appointment is required.
